Thankful Thursdays ~ Find the Extra in the Ordinary

  • Sharebar

Hooray it’s Thankful Thursday and if you look closely I bet you can find the extra~ordinary!

ex·traor·di·nar·yAdjective/ikˈstrôrdnˌerē/
1. Very unusual or remarkable.
2. Unusually great.

How many times do we just move through our day hoping for it to be over because we are tired, stressed, too busy or maybe we woke up on the wrong side of the bed? I know I do that too many times and I am certain I missed out on something spectacular because I was too distracted to pay attention to the details. I believe that we have become a society of “having to many irons in the fire” kind of people, we all to often overlook the extraordinary in our everyday moments. There is a quote that says “it’s not the number of breaths that we take, but it’s the moments that take our breath away”. If your breath is taken away that would be extraordinary wouldn’t it? What does that mean anyway? I think that quote seems to mean when the love of your life proposes to you or when you say “I do” or when your child is born, or a baptism, or a first day of school or the first Prom~you get my point right?

Well, I learned many years ago that there are moments that meet the extraordinary if we would just slow down long enough to really see them not just with our eyes and ears, but more importantly our hearts. Well, how about if I share a few ordinary moments that really turned out to be extraordinary and made me thankful and grateful that someone tapped me on the shoulder and whispered in my ear “did you get that?” I used to think that the 1st for everything was a great milestone, but then I realized that the “last” of things can be amazingly extraordinary. The last day of Kindergarten is that milestone that the true baby days are over and it’s a day to be celebrated for all the places they will go. How about the last day of elementary school or junior high. The last YEAR of high school is probably the most overlooked series of extraordinary events that will lead to the last time your child will truly rely upon you for support, advice, a shoulder to lean on and the last year they will be at home full time before they venture out into the world to spread their wings. How about the last time they would let you read a bedtime story to them? Are the magic of Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy still alive and well in your household?

How about a cup of coffee with your Mom talking about nothing special, but isn’t it? Or maybe dinner with the family, isn’t the fact you are all together at the table extraordinary? Oh my it’s getting dark so early, did you miss the sunset? Carpooling to that overwhelming job everyday with a co-worker, did you miss the time of sharing with one another that has made you now friends? Stopping for coffee in the morning at the place you ALWAYS go, did you forget they know your name? Sitting together with your partner on a porch saying nothing at all while the cars go by, did you forget that you know one another so well words are not needed? Are you seeing with your heart now a little more clearly what may seem like an everyday, mundane, run of the mill task or moment can really be an extraordinary event overlooked?

Today, I am thankful that by the grace of God I try to use my heart and not always my eyes and ears to see the extraordinary. Please don’t be fooled, it took an extremem life changing event for me to truly see these things. I have met some extraordinary people online that I thought would just be like casual people you pass on the street, but oh no, I can say we are best friends for the sharing we have done with one another. And, as always, I am thankful for the extraordinary people I have met through this Tuesday in Templeton Page and that’s it’s never just the business of real estate for me, it’s the strong connection to my community.

Please share a moment of ordinary turned extraordinary with Tuesday Girl as I love a good story!
